Infertility at Christmas is hard. Really hard. As I write in my latest @ivfbabble article, Christmas is all about kids..so you’re constantly reminded of the one thing you don’t have and would give anything to have. And you have to attend those yearly Christmas celebrations where there’s always one nosey Aunt or drunk work colleague who asks ‘why don’t you have kids?’ And then proceeds to offer you unsolicited advice ‘you just need to relax.’

I recently watched #joynetflix and I loved it. It’s an incredible insight into the birth of #ivf. Thanks to the three amazing pioneers - Dr Robert Edwards, Patrick Steptoe and Jean Purdy - who paved the way for the first IVF baby, Louise Brown, born in 1978.

It’s a fascinating insight into the battles these pioneers fought. As Patrick Steptoe says, “you’re aware you will unite the world against us.” And despite the prejudice and challenges they faced, they tirelessly fought for years. In one scene, when faced with push back and asked if what they were doing was in the interest of science, Dr Edwards simply says “Yes, infertility is a scientific problem.”

And of course, the film gives a beautiful insight into the raw and emotional side of infertility. I often found myself in tears watching this movie. As Jean Purdy says, “women presume we can have children, and there is a biological and social expectation. Nothing can make that absence worse.”

While I do think #joynetflix is an incredible movie and well worth watching, you may find it triggering. So depending where you are on your infertility journey, it may be one you want to watch later on.
